Letting Go Of Fear

Recently I was scrolling on Facebook and a little video of a hermit crab came rolling onto my screen. It was a short 5-minute video, but it held not only my curiosity but my attention that inspired me to write this article.

You’re probably thinking, “I’ve been to the aquarium – I’ve seen a hermit crab. Nothing too special about that. What made this particular video so unique?”

In this brief video, the hermit crab, let’s call him Hermie, was getting ready to move from its smaller shell into a bigger shell. Hermie looked at 5 or 6 of them before it finally made its choice. Now, hermit crabs move into a new shell all the time without anyone noticing so when I was watching the video, I knew it was something special to witness.

[blur]You could see Hermie’s eyes darting around for danger because it knows the most vulnerable it will ever be is during this point, this transition. In the blink of an eye, if it took too long outside the shell then it can be eaten up by something bigger before getting a chance to make the transition. Spending a lot of energy keeping a vigilant eye but knowing that staying in a smaller shell is not going to work forever and not having one is not an option.

I’m watching the video, almost hold my breath, and silently encouraging this crab to go into its new shell.

As entrepreneurs and business owners, you are constantly sharpening your tool kit and adapting as you learn. If you started in corporate and moved into being an entrepreneur and owning your own business, then maybe you can relate to the feeling of being scared out of your mind and doing something new.

What steps did you go through to overcome feeling vulnerable?

When was the last time you went through a personal evolution and growth that terrified you?

Why did you need to transform?

Who is someone that helped you make that transition and transformation in your life?

How did you make it through to the person you are today?

Everyone is going through a change, including yourself. You look around for something that embodies the new, evolved you and it takes time to figure that out. Not every shell will be the right fit and trying to squeeze into something temporarily may work but not forever.

Don’t let your fears control the dreams and goals you’ve envisioned and created. Once you have them, you know the only answer is to move forward.

Will you still be saying to yourself, “One day” or will you change your tune and say, “Day one”?[/blur]
